So apparently it’s becoming a favorite past time to have customers guess where I’m from regardless if I’m talking to them or even discussing my almost tragic story across the country. Today, for instance, I was helping a client with purchasing an appropriate lighting setup for his studio. We then went into a long discussion about film versus video and I shared that where I went to school shooting HD was the best I could get unless I wanted to pay mega bucks for film. This lead to the question of where I went to school, etc. He was amazed that I was from NC and that I didn’t have a southern accent. This was a first. He then proceeded to make fun of Jacksonville, NC. His only assumption was that I either “dropped it” or that I never had one. Hmmm. About an hour later I was talking to one of my co-workers and a customer walks up and asks “Texas?” Really? WTF? So I’m not sure where my accent lies. It’s either heavy south or non-existent. You’d think there would be some gray area here, like, say, North Carolina?
this is not what we expected.
